Deborah wrote: "...would love information about my ancestors. the oldest pic (top right) is William Harris b. March 1828 in Flaxley Parish, Gloucestershire; d. April 1883 m. to Harriett Rhodes (top left) Her father was John Rhodes, her mother was named Hanna. William and Harriett's son Hiram Harris(bottom) was born in Cinderford At the time of William's death his ocupation was listed as that of Check Mate at a Coal Machine Does anyone have information in regards to the Harris family in Cinderford ?

Dave Tuffley added: "... I think what is meant by a check mate, is a mate or helper to the check weighman who was appointed by the men and who weighed the carts of coal as they came out of the mine. The men were therefore guaranteed to be paid for the correct weight of coal they produced at the mine".

John Harris added (June 2012): "... as you can see my name is Harris - long time Cinderford and Drybrook families. I believe there was a Mr Rhodes, postmaster in Cinderford who delivered on horseback. I have seen photos of him".
