Howle Hill football team

An old photo of a Howell Hill football team

Graham added: "... Date not known but either 1950s or 60s. All I know about the photo is the player top far right is my uncle, Jack Webb. Can any one identify the rest?".

Back row, left to right: (1) Ernie Marshall, (2) "Shirty" Baldwin?, (3) ?, (4) ?, (5) Fred Evans. (6) Jack Webb.
Front row, left to right:(1) John Cawthorne?, (2) ?, (3) Dick Stacey, (4) Gerald Stacey. (5) ?.

A site visitor added: "... Half a century ago, fresh from school and working for a Gloucester journalist, I would collect all the soccer results in the winter for the national press. I remember one time phoning clubs and getting results like: "Cinderford 2, Chew Magna 0," and so on. Each result was worth a few pence to the agency. Then one wet Saturday evening I phoned Howle Hill and was told: "'Owell 'ill 1, Berry 'ill lost." I've never forgotten the indignation of the man on the other end of the phone when I tried to find out the number of goals that had been scored by the two sides".

Alan Watkins added (February 2017): ... In the early Sixties I worked for a number of freelance reporters in Gloucester (as well as The Citizen). On a Saturday afternoon I was deputed to ring the various clubs for the result of their games which would be sent to the national newspapers. Typical of the results would be something like: "Milkwall 1 Painswick 1" and so on. One Saturday I rang the Harrow Hill club number ready to jot down the result. "'Arrow 'ill wun...." I waited - and waited. "And the other team?" I asked. "They'm lost," I was told.
