Royston Pritchard recalled (Nov 2006) - All the Deputies Overmen and Managers
had
to
qualify
annually
for
a First
Aid Certificate. Dr Patrick O'Driscoll and his son Dr Michael O'Driscoll
of Bream and
Dr
Booth attended various collieries on weekends to give training to
and
examine
the First Aiders. This was done by the doctors on a voluntary basis.
Thanks to Royston Pritchard, David Haynes Janet Kear, Dave Powell, Brian
Davey, Eileen Davey and Yvonne
Hill
for
help
with
the
names.
John O'Driscoll added (November 2016): "... There is an old family story that my grandfather, referred to here as Dr Patrick O'Driscoll (but always known in the family as Jack, he was John Patrick) was rather fed up after a long day examining for these first aid exams for no fee. At the very end of the day, the trainer informed my grandfather that he too had to be examined so he could continue first aid training. My grandfather was so annoyed he asked him a real stinker of a question ("How do you sterilise cat gut") and subsequently passed all the students but failed the trainer! After this, he was not asked to examine again!".
