Fredrick and Elizabeth Wilkes at Brierley, Gloucestershire.

image: Frederick and Elizabeth Wilkes

John wrote: (March 2007): "This is a picture of my paternal grandparents Fredrick and Elizabeth Wilkes with their children May and Alfred Bertie -- always known as Bert---- ( my father).
As far as I can make out this picture was taken at Brierley around 1919. Bert was later to marry Gwen Beach. Bert served in the war as a RAF heavy transport driver in The Middle East and later in Italy.
In the 1950's Bert took over his Uncle Joe's business, that being, The Post Office and General Stores on Ruardean Hill and was a stalwalt of Ruardean Hill Cricket Club.
As a footnote for students of Forest of Dean history, this branch of the Wilkes family are directly related to the Forest of Dean bear killers !".
