This photo was taken by Brian James just above "The
Tank" at Flourmill Colliery.
Brian Davey who has lived in Australia
for many years still remembers his swimming visits to "The Tank"-
which had many concrete pillars rising from it's base, presumably to
support cooling water pipes for the Flourmill Colliery. Brian says
that the short distances between the pillars was ideal for people learning
to swim. The Tank was visited by children and adults alike. It was
drained by the early 1960's..
Tim Humphries added (June 2006): "The Tank was also a popular place
for catching sticklebacks. All you needed was an empty jam-jar with string
tied round the
neck, and a bit of bright coloured glass or china in the bottom.
The fish were attracted by the glass or china, and once they were
inside the jar a quick yank on the string, and with any luck you had your
fish!".
Pete Lee added (August 2008): "After 'The Tank' was drained the one corner
remained as a bog, a great place for catching Newts. I found an exeptionaly large
type, which I was told was an "Evat" any Ideas?".
