A barge in the canal at Pine End, Lydney

A barge in the canal at Lydney Harbour

Left to right (men touching the log): 1,2,3 Merv Rudge, 4 (man standing on the back of the barge).

This log was notable as it was the biggest log delivered by barge to Lydney.

The logs were removed from the barges by the overhead gantry crane which transported them over the road into the Pine End works. They were then soaked in a hot water bath to make them pliable, then peeled with a 'peeler'. The peeled sheets of wood were dried before being glued and then pressed together to form plywood of the required thickness and durability.

John Dobbs added (September 2023): "... Man stood at end of log with what looks like white gloves is George Warwick".
